What Is Maxillofacial Trauma?
Maxillofacial trauma refers to injuries involving the face, jaw, mouth, and related structures, including:
- Fractured jaws (mandible or maxilla)
- Orbital fractures (bones around the eyes)
- Cheekbone and nasal fractures
- Dental and alveolar injuries (tooth displacement, broken teeth, bone damage)
- Soft tissue injuries (cuts, lacerations, and facial wounds)
These injuries often result from vehicle accidents, falls, physical altercations, or sports-related incidents and may impact breathing, eating, speaking, and facial appearance if not properly treated.
Our Surgical Approach to Facial Trauma
We take a comprehensive, patient-focused approach to facial trauma care, beginning with rapid evaluation and on-site 3D CBCT imaging for immediate diagnosis and treatment planning. We use advanced surgical techniques to realign bones and repair soft tissue, restoring both function and facial aesthetics.
Thanks to Dr. DeLisi’s fellowship training in anesthesia, procedures can be performed safely and comfortably in our office or hospital setting. We also offer thorough follow-up care, including support for healing, scar management, and additional reconstructive procedures if needed.

Many facial trauma cases can be managed in our surgical suite at Bend Oral Surgery using IV sedation or general anesthesia. For severe trauma involving multiple facial fractures, systemic injuries, or the need for multi-specialty coordination with plastic surgeons, ENT specialists, or emergency medicine, treatment may be integrated with hospital-based care. Dr. DeLisi holds hospital privileges and is experienced in managing both office-based and inpatient trauma cases. Learn more about our trauma and emergency services.
Significant facial trauma can result in changes to the bite, jaw alignment, and facial symmetry that persist beyond the initial healing period. In these cases, secondary facial reconstructive surgery may be recommended to restore proper function and appearance. This may involve corrective jaw surgery, bone grafting, or additional procedures to address residual deformity or dysfunction. Dr. DeLisi develops long-term treatment plans that account for both the immediate trauma and its downstream effects on oral and facial health.
